| “Wind Caravan” is a worldwide art project given by Susumu Shingu and his wind activated sculptures. In the world’s 6 most exotic sites, Shingu and people who live there collaborated to place his sculptures. It attempts to discover the secrets of harmonious coexistence with nature and true happiness through artistic activities and cultural exchange with the local people. |
 |
| Started from Japan, it took the caravan 1 year and a
half to travel around the 5 more countries; New Zealand, Finland, Morocco, Mongolia
and Brazil. Throughout the journey, quite a few governments, companies, artists,
critics and local residents supported them and were participated in the project.
Even in Morocco, where iconolatry was banned, Shingu’s way of expression
using wind power was fairly welcomed. In New Zealand, Maori Tribes paid due respect
to Shingu as "master of the wind" and they finally allowed him to visit
their sacred island. |
 |
| One of the greatest choreographers of modern dance, Jiří
Kylián, choreographed the local children in Brazil, and it impressed Shingu
so much. |
 |
|
 |
| Wind Caravan impressed people around the world beyond cultural and social differences --- and it left a beautiful echo in their mind. |
 |
| The book illustrates whole story of the caravan’s 18 months journey and magnificent art projects, with beautiful photographs. |

Born
in Osaka Japan 1937, Susumu Shingu is an internationally famous artist whose kinetic
sculptures are acclaimed both in Japan and abroad. In addition to creating sculptures,
he has written and illustrated several children's books and created several theater
works.
During 1960-62, he studied oil painting under Franco Gentilini at Accademia di
Belle Arti di Roma. Originally trained as a painter, Shingu became interested
in sculpture and he began creating moving 3D works. After he came back to Japan
in 1966, he was chosen as one of eight sculptors to exhibit works at EXPO '70
Osaka. In 1971, he was invited to the Artist, Carpenter Center for the Visual
Arts, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts. For the reason that Shingu’s
sculptures are moved by natural power such as wind and water, he is called “Wind
Specialist” Shingu's works are installed at Porter Square, Cambridge, Mass.,
Olympic Park, Seoul, and the port of Genoa, Italy.
In 2000, Shingu held the first Wind Caravan with his 21 sculptures stored in a
container. He began 18 months traveling and holding exhibitions in various countries
all over the world. |
