Born
in Osaka Japan 1937, Susumu Shingu is an internationally famous artist whose kinetic
sculptures are acclaimed both in Japan and abroad. In addition to creating sculptures,
he has written and illustrated several children's books and created several theater
works.
During 1960-62, he studied oil painting under Franco Gentilini at Accademia di
Belle Arti di Roma. Originally trained as a painter, Shingu became interested
in sculpture and he began creating moving 3D works. After he came back to Japan
in 1966, he was chosen as one of eight sculptors to exhibit works at EXPO '70
Osaka. In 1971, he was invited to the Artist, Carpenter Center for the Visual
Arts, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts. For the reason that Shingu’s
sculptures are moved by natural power such as wind and water, he is called “Wind
Specialist” Shingu's works are installed at Porter Square, Cambridge, Mass.,
Olympic Park, Seoul, and the port of Genoa, Italy.
In 2000, Shingu held the first Wind Caravan with his 21 sculptures stored in a
container. He began 18 months traveling and holding exhibitions in various countries
all over the world.
